The Anatomy of a Farmout Agreement
This presentation will cover the basic structure of a farmout agreement, critical terms defining the parties' interests, and potential pitfalls for those distributing revenues pursuant to farmouts. It will also include a discussion of challenges presented by chaining title and calculating ownership interest in leases subject to farmout agreements.
Jon Tjornehoj and Alex Finch
Jon Tjornehoj (Turn-a-hoy) is the Managing Member of Tjornehoj & Hack LLC, a law firm specializing in energy and natural resource matters. Jon's practice focuses on mineral title examination for oil and gas development projects in Colorado and Wyoming. Jon also has experience in litigating federal environmental and public lands issues, as well as conducting natural resource transactions. In his title practice, Jon has been the reluctant interpreter of many vexing farmout agreements, and he hopes to find it therapeutic to complain about them today.
Alex Finch is an Associate Attorney at Tjornehoj & Hack LLC. Alex’s practice consists of analyzing oil and gas leasehold interests and preparation of mineral title opinions, especially in Weld County, Colorado. Prior to joining Tjornehoj & Hack, Alex worked as a consultant on National Environmental Policy Act matters.
